"The Agency issued rations, but not nearly enough to keep a person alive. Each week they gave out a little flour and sugar and sometimes a small piece of meat. On Friday they would butcher maybe two or three cows from the Agency herd, but when you divide a couple of beeves up amongst about three thousand people, nobody gets very much. Thursday we call Nothing-Happens-Day, because by then all the people would be starving and just sitting around waiting for the next rations. Every day people died of starvation, and a lot of others died because they were too weak to resist pneumonia and other diseases.
