At Dawn on the 23rd of January, 1870, a Colonel Baker led a dawn raid on a sleeping village of Blackfoot. Their Chief, Heavy Runner, produced a paper signed by the Superintendent of Indian Affairs to say that he was a good Indian. Nevertheless, two hundred .50 calibre carbines of the 2nd Cavalry were pointed at the village on Marias River.

That village was full of invalids, women, and children.  Chief Heavy Runner was fatally wounded by a shot to the chest. Of 150 plus Indians killed, only 15 were of fighting age. This incident was known as the "Baker Massacre".
